Rafah ; The Gaza Strip's crumbling health system is under further strain after the Israeli army intensified its bombardment of Rafah's Tal as-Sultan area and other parts of the enclave, a day after an attack on a Rafah camp killed 45 Palestinians.

Medical staff and patients are reported to be trapped inside the facility, where many Palestinian families are also taking refuge.

Earlier on Monday, the Kuwait Specialty Hospital in Rafah was forced to close after two of its medical staff were killed in an Israeli attack outside the hospital gates.

Witnesses said the victims came under fire from Israeli aircraft. The hospital was treating most of the 249 people injured in Sunday night's Israeli attack on a camp for displaced people.

The ministry said the dead included at least 12 women, eight children and three elderly people, while three other bodies could not be identified.

In a separate development, the Egyptian military said without giving further details that one of its soldiers was killed during a firefight in the Rafah area. Israel said it was in contact with Egyptian officials and both sides said they were investigating.

Egypt's state-owned Cairo TV reported that an initial investigation found that the soldier responded to a firefight between Israeli forces and Palestinian militants. Egypt has warned that an Israeli incursion into Rafah could jeopardize the two countries' decades-old peace treaty.
